Kerabu is a Southeast Asian restaurant tucked into Glen Iris, offering a lively take on Asian dining with a menu that invites sharing and exploration of bold flavors. The atmosphere feels cozy yet bustling, making it clear why the spot draws a steady local crowd even amid nearby competitors. Booking ahead is a smart move, especially for weekend evenings when it fills up quickly.

The dining experience here leans toward casual group gatherings or relaxed dinners where you can try a variety of dishes without rushing. The seating is straightforward—functional rather than plush—which fits the energetic, no-fuss vibe of the place. While some might find the chairs a bit stiff, the focus remains on the food and company rather than lounging for hours.

Kerabu’s menu firmly anchors on Southeast Asian classics with thoughtful touches. Shared entrées such as the spring rolls, curry puffs, and satay chicken provide tangy, uplifting starters that stimulate the palate and encourage communal eating. For mains, the Red Curry Duck and Char Kway Teow stand out, offering large portions and a genuine taste of regional recipes. Those drawn to richer, spiced dishes will appreciate options like the Nahm Jim Fried Snapper or the Gulai Ikan, both known for generous servings and robust flavors that reflect Malaysian and Thai influences.

One appealing aspect is the restaurant’s BYO policy, which helps keep dining affordable without sacrificing the quality of the experience. Service tends to be efficient and friendly, contributing to a relaxed environment where the emphasis is on enjoying the meal rather than formalities. Although it’s not a spot for lingering coffees or quiet, one-on-one chats, Kerabu fits well for groups of friends or family wanting a flavorful, lively night out.

Located on Burke Road, it’s a go-to option for locals craving authentic Southeast Asian fare that balances quality with accessible pricing. Early evening visits on weekdays might be the best time to enjoy the space more quietly, while weekend nights offer a vibrant backdrop of chatter and clinking dishes. Overall, Kerabu caters to those who appreciate sharing diverse, well-executed dishes in a practical, energetic setting with a local neighborhood feel.

A number of fun items on the menu..the flavours were tangy and uplifting. Entrees are fun to share and the mains were well priced. The chairs are a bit stiff but overall a good experience.

It was very busy in spite of the other restaurants nearby so it is best to book. Service was efficient and friendly. We shared 5 entrees and each was delicious with the curry puffs and the prawn thingy (see photo) being the standouts. Green Thai chicken, fish, beef and seafood for shared mains and we were full. BYO helped keep the cost down to $100 a couple including tip. Worth a visit.

Update: 06/01/2023 I went to Kerabu with a friend again. I felt like having fish this time and asked recommendation from the staff there. She recommended Gulai Ikan as I said I would like to have something more like Malaysian style. The fish was very well cooked with nice curry flavor. Again in large portion. Initially, my friend thought $45 was too expensive for a fish dish, but after he saw the portion and had the food, he is 100% convinced it’s value for money and he’s listed Kerabu as the restaurant he will take his mom to. - original- Loved Char Kway Teow, chicken Satay and duck curry. All in large portions. The staffs were nice and friendly. Will go there again!

Delicious South East Asian cuisine We got the last table for four after numerous attempts at making a reservation and were therefore looking forward to the visit with anticipation. The food was delicious and the service reasonably good given how packed the venue was. Be warned that the sizes of the dishes are pretty big. Despite our reservations, we ordered an additional dish on the advise of the waiter and found that we had way too much food. The dishes were tasty and authentic, the highlight of course being the Malay salad that the restaurant was named after. Made with really fresh "greens" and topped off with a nicely balance hot, sweet and sour dressing, their Kerabu was delicious. The dishes we ordered were reminiscent of the local food found on the border of Malaysia and Thailand which makes sense why a restaurant named after a Malay salad would be list under Thai cuisine. Kerabu is certainly on our recommended list if you are after good authentic South East Asian cuisine.

Very popular restaurant, make sure to book in advance. Cannot fault any of the dishes ordered. They made a mistake on one of our dishes & that dish was given to us for free which was a generous gesture. Young girl serving our table upstairs was polite & efficient. Bonus: no weekend surcharge nor credit card surcharge.
